Search engine optimization (commonly referred to as SEO) is the art of developing or enhancing web sites to make them search engine friendly and achieve a higher rank.

I referred to this as an art instead of a science for a variety of reasons. Major search engines including Google and Yahoo may provide advise and suggestions as how to rank higher but they don't publish the details of their algorithms. To make SEO even more of an art all major search engines are constantly changing these rank algorithms.

Poorly constructed web sites have a multitude of shortcomings to cause a site to rank poorly. Among them are dead links, poorly constructed title tags, graphics use of important text, and most importantly poor written content that does not contain critical keywords.

In the early days of search engines it was enough to load the meta tag keyword with a complete list of keywords relevant to the site. Today it is suspected that most search engines rely very little on this information. It is believed that content and link rank are the major contributing factors in high rankings.
